Echoes' of Winter - Naseby

Echoes of Winter was named a Single Shot Finalist in the Photographer of the Year 2025, presented by Ted’s Cameras.

Blanketed in fresh snow near Naseby, two solitary trees stand quietly against a soft winter sky. Gentle pastel tones drift across the horizon, while the untouched snow creates a sense of calm and stillness. Stripped back to its simplest elements, the scene invites reflection — an intimate moment where silence, space, and winter light speak for themselves.

Naseby Township

Captured after a fresh Maniototo snowfall, this scene shows the iconic Boot Manufacturer and Watchmaker store wrapped in winter magic. The colour’s soften, the towns quiet and Naseby’s heritage buildings stand proud against the blanket of white. A true slice of home for anyone who loves the Maniototo.

Coalpit Dam - Naseby

Coalpit Dam - Naseby has been recognized at a national level, including being named a Landscape Finalist in the Single Shot Photographer of the Year awards. This places the image among a small selection chosen for its strength in composition, technical quality, and connection to the landscape.

I was also selected as a Top 25 Finalist in the New Zealand Amateur Photography Awards (NZAPA), where the image received a Silver Medal.

A quiet winter scene at Coalpit Dam in Naseby, where snow-covered posts sit still in the calm water and frosted pine trees line the far shore. Soft pastel tones in the sky add a gentle warmth to the otherwise cool, muted landscape, giving the image a peaceful, almost timeless feel.

Coalpit Dam Jetty - Naseby

A snow-covered jetty reaches gently into the still waters of Coalpit Dam, drawing the eye toward frost-laden trees lining the far shore. Soft morning light washes the winter sky in pale peach and lavender tones, reflected subtly across the calm surface below. The scene is quiet and unhurried — a moment of complete stillness where winter settles in and time seems to pause.

Hawkdun Runs Road Hut

Set beneath the vast, snow-dusted Hawkdun Mountains, this isolated Hawkdun Runs Road hut stands quietly against the raw Central Otago landscape. Weathered corrugated iron, softened by winter light, tells a story of endurance and solitude, while the surrounding snow highlights the stark beauty of the high country. With no sign of human presence, the hut feels both fragile and resilient — a humble reminder of life in one of New Zealand’s most remote environments.

Idaburn Gateway

A quiet farm entrance opens onto the wide, golden plains of Idaburn, with layered ranges rising softly in the distance. The fence line and open gate draw the eye inward, guiding the viewer through the land and into the heart of Central Otago’s high country.

Warm evening light settles across tussock-covered paddocks, while distant hills hold the last traces of winter snow. Simple and unhurried, this image reflects the openness, scale, and quiet strength of rural Central Otago — a place shaped by land, seasons, and time.
