My Photography Awards

From local landscapes to International competitions, these awards celebrate the moments, stories, and scenery that inspire my work across the Maniototo and beyond

One of the highlights of my photography journey this year was being named a winner in The Mono Awards 2025. Competing against over 3,500 incredible entries, I’m grateful to have my work acknowledged in this celebration of monochrome photography.

The Mono Awards 2025

People Category: Winner

In the Shearing Sheds

Based in Ranfurly, in the heart of the Maniototo in Central Otago, New Zealand, Amy Hughes specialises in landscape photography, and describes herself as having a deep passion for the region’s sweeping hills, endless skies, and the textured remains of forgotten farmsteads.

“My work captures the beauty of rural life both in its starkness and its quiet, intimate moments,” she says.
“I’m also drawn to the strength, resilience, and untold stories of the people and animals that shape my rural community.”
IN THE SHEARING SHEDS

Amy Hughes’ People category winning image shows the shearing sheds depicting her eight-year-old son.

For Hughes, the image tells a layered, authentic narrative:

“The image speaks of rural life, generations and time, and the connection between man and animal,” she says.
“It’s captured in indifferent, maybe even grimy, working light, yet it’s softened with tenderness and calm. I feel the composition, lighting, and mood all work together to evoke emotion and spark curiosity.”

For her young son, Kahu’s characterful expression and posture created a beautiful moment, which she was able to capture and use to create an award-winning image.

Prize: $3,000, Synology DS923+ 4-bay NAS with two 4-bay hard drives valued at $1,499.
WHAT THE JUDGES SAID

“This scene is set, the lighting is superb, and now it’s up to us — the viewers — to interpret the story as we choose. I see this as a timeless photograph featuring two strongly different characters. It’s the contrast between the older ewe with her bulging belly and the young shearing hand, with his relaxed and ‘old-school’ attitude, that takes centre stage. Nothing is out of place, and the scene feels authentic as a whole. This is an image making with a high level of craft and storytelling skill.” — Jackie Ranken

“This is a truly original documentary-style photograph that has a raw honesty about it. I love that it takes you to a place that makes you smile. To me, the grungy black and white interpretation has made this feel real.” — Mike Langford

The Landscape Awards 2025

In 2025 I received two honours in The Landscape Awards, an international competition presented by Camera House which attracts more than 2,000 entries from across Australia and New Zealand.

My photograph “Home Hills Run Homestead” was ranked #6 in the Top 10 Landscapes. The image captures the historic shearing quarters and cookhouse at Home Hills Run in the Hawkdun Ranges, Maniototo, during the depths of winter.

A second image, “Saint Bathans Downs Road”, also achieved recognition, placing #18 in the Top 20. This photograph features an evening scene along Saint Bathans Downs Road in Central Otago.

Both awards were judged by a panel of leading landscape photographers from Australia and New Zealand, making this recognition especially meaningful.

Photographer of the Year 2024

In 2024, I was selected as a Finalist in the Photographer of the Year awards run by Australian Photography, one of the most recognised amateur photography competitions across Australia and New Zealand.
My images were chosen from thousands of entries submitted across the region, and being named a finalist places my work among the top-performing photographs in the competition.

  • First Prize – “People”

  • First Prize – “Animals”

  • First Prize – “Digitally Enhanced”

These awards were judged from a range of local entries celebrating rural life, creativity, and the Maniototo landscape. I’m proud to have my work recognised across multiple categories at this long-standing community event.

Otago Merino Association Photography Competition

In 2023 my photograph Kakanui Mountains was awarded People’s Choice Winner and 2nd Place at the Otago Merino Awards Dinner.
The image later sold for $1,050 in the Child Cancer Foundation Auction — the highest-selling photograph of the night.

I’m incredibly proud that my work was able to contribute meaningful support to such an important cause, and grateful to everyone who voted, supported, and bid on the image.

In 2025 my photograph “In the Shearing Shed” was awarded the People’s Choice Winner at the Otago Merino Association Awards.
This recognition is especially meaningful as it is voted for by the community — farmers, industry members, and supporters of the high-country traditions the event celebrates.

The image reflects the raw energy, rhythm, and authenticity of life inside a working shearing shed, and I’m honoured that it resonated so strongly with the audience.

I’m incredibly proud to have won the Central Otago Heritage Trust’s heritage photography competition, chosen from over 400 entries. My photograph was showcased in the exhibition at the Clyde Museum on December 1, 2023 — a milestone that celebrates my passion for capturing the heritage and landscapes of Central Otago
